Sharing an Evening

Only the moon and me…

Tonight we share the loneliness.

Tonight we share the ocean’s song,

Tonight we share an empty beach.

Dark sand swirls and dissolves

In an angry rush of waves

Hungry to gobble it up

And reclaim precious possessions.

Lights flicker on and off

In houses nestled by the bay.

A dog barks into the chilly breeze,

A black cat purrs on a child’s bed.

Only the moon and me…

Tonight we share the smell of spring.

May nights grow longer and longer,

Shore gardens remember their colors.

Only the moon and me…

It’s late-past-midnight time.

I stand in cool, deep sand

My toes curling, trying to take root.

Watching the moon

Watch me…

I linger here bathed

In beautiful loneliness and light.

Sharing the quietude,

Sharing the solitude.

Tonight it’s

Only the moon and me.
