September Storm

Stone-colored clouds

Bringing torrents of rain.

Wind rattles doors and panes;

Bends young trees in half,

Snaps limbs off old ones.

Patio table turns over,

Shattering glass top

Into tiny puzzle pieces.

Lights blink…

On…off…on…off:

Complete darkness!

Creek waters spill over,

Backyard filling like a lake.

Stone-colored clouds

Bringing torrents of rain

And ripples of fear

That run like a strong current

Into my heart.

I wring my hands,

Swallow hard,

Fight back the urge

To break  into

Salty tears.

    • Thanks for visiting, Fran. I wrote this about the rainstorm in 1996 or 1997 (can’t remember the year) when many homes were flooded and some cars washed away. I remember the one car that was upside down in Sandy Run Creek at the golf course! It was very frightening – I was home alone!
