Hummer in My Garden

Life in the fast lane

This ruby-throated hummingbird

Hovers in mid-air

To probe sage and bee balm,

Salvia and morning  glory.

A fast-forward metabolism,

This feisty hummer

Consumes his own body weight

In sweet nectar for energy

To beat those wings

At high speed.

One day he’ll leave:

Cross the Gulf of Mexico

In a nonstop flight –

Five hundred miles!

Chasing off another male,

To protect his turf

In mating season,

He reappears in my backyard

At the first burst of summer.

Hummingbird, small and colorful,

With iridescent feathers.

Ruby-throated hummer

In my backyard.
